The Journey of a Multiracial Family
Six Generations of the Francis Family
Frances Bibbins Latimer
In the year 1640, the Gingaskin Indians, displaced
from their land in Old Town Neck by John Kendall,
made application to Governor William Berkeley for an
unused portion of the land belonging to the Savage
family to be used as a settlement for their tribe. The
governor directed that 650 acres be laid off for the
use of the Gingaskin Indians.
Prior to 1791, four Francis men came to
Gingascount and through intermarriage became
a part of the Gingaskin Indians tribe. There is no
way to know how long the Francis men had been
there before they were trackable, so the story of the
Francis family begins in 1791 in Gingascount.
