The first national organization for black women was founded by Hallie Q. Brown, of Wilberforce University. Brown wanted African-Americans included in the planning of the Columbian Exposition in 1893, but when the request was made she was told that a membership could only be given to managers of national organization. To secure recognition and mimbership, Brown formed the Colored Women's League of Washington.
