Eastville, Virginia was called the “The Hornes” during the early years of the Eastern Shore. It was chosen to be the site of the court because of it’s central location in Northampton County, thereby becoming the center of activity.
It was to Eastville that citizens came to pay taxes, attend court, to get marriage or business licenses. It was to Eastville that free Negroes came to be weighed, measured, and registered in the Register of Free Negroes and slaves were brought, to be sold or hired out. Eastville was the hub of the Northampton community
